Abstract

546,845. Control systems for resistance welding &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 27, 1941, No. 8086. Convention date, June 29, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] Thermionic control.-Reversely connected immersion-igniter valves 5, 6, in which the excitation circuits each contain a unidirectional conducting device 14, 15, have a pair of reversely connected grid controlled discharge devices 21, 22 connected back to back in the common portion of the excitation circuits and adapted by phase control of their grid voltages to advance and retard the time of ignition of the valves 5, 6. The excitation circuits may also contain timing means 35 to determine a sequence of welding current impulses for example and a relay contact delaying closure of the excitation circuit until the cathodes of the discharge devices 21, 22 have become heated. Adjustable resistances and a condenser 41 constitute a network whereby any desired phase position may be given to the grid voltages of the devices 21, 22 and a manual switch 47 may provide means for selectively applying voltages in either of two phase relationships.
