Abstract

546,439. Converting. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 31, 1941, No. 4306. Convention date, March 30, 1940. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In a converting arrangement in which power is transmitted between an A.C. network 2 and a D.C. network 1 through a transformer 3 and a pair of mercury arc discharge devices 4, 5 of the type in which the moment of ignition is adjustably controlled by current supplied to immersion-ignitor electrodes 8, auxiliary electrodes 9, 10 are provided in the ignition circuits to relieve the electrodes 8 of current as soon as a cathodic spot is formed on the mercury pool. The electrodes 8, 9, 10 are all supplied from a transformer 12 which may be operated as described in Specification 390,184 to produce a peaky wave form. The negative half waves of the control currents are withheld from the immersionignitor electrodes 8 by valves 14, 15. Regulation is effected by a phase-shifter 13 in the primary circuit of the transformer 12. A polyphase arrangement is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown) and in that arrangement, regulation is effected by grid control of the valves through which control current is supplied to the immersion-ignitor electrodes.
