Abstract
546,124. Supply systems for welding arcs. KITTEL, F. W. B. (Linde Air Products Co.). Jan. 2, 1941, No. 60. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] Self-stable characteristics for arc welding are obtained by feeding an electrode at a constant speed and supplying the arc from a source in which the power output is an inverse fraction of the output voltage. The feeding speed is adjusted to give an arc voltage in excess of that at which the maximum output is obtained from the source. The power absorbed in the weld will then vary in such a way as to vary the consumption of electrode material in accordance with variations in the length of the arc to maintain it constant under varying weld conditions. Preferably the weld is effected under a blanket of flux which is conductive when melted as in Specifications 433,723 and 438,855, [both in Group II]. The supply circuit may include a transformer or choke coil with variable magnetic leakage whereby the current supply may be adapted to the nature of the work. A welding dynamo of suitable characteristics may be used.
