545,728. Reverberatory furnaces. AMBROSE, J. H. Feb. 5, 1940, No. 2218. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1939. [Class 51 (ii)] A reverberatory furnace for smelting ores having burners 2 at one end so arranged that the flames are directed longitudinally of the furnace, hoppers 3, 4 for charging metal bearing material and flux at the sides of the furnace in the vicinity of the end of the furnace in which the burners 2 are arranged and means for removing matte and slag at the other end of the furnace is provided with additional burners 7 at one or both sides of the furnace so arranged that the flames therefrom do not impinge directly on the charge.
