Abstract
544,952. Storing gases under pressure. BRIDGES, W. Nov. 1, 1940, No. 15970. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In applying a helical wire reinforcement to the exterior of a body, such as in reinforcing cylinders for storing gases or liquids under pressure with high tensile wire such as piano wire to afford resistance to penetration from without by missiles such as bullets, bombs or shell splinters, the body is surrounded by a ring, such as a tinned brass or other soft metal ring at least at one end of the reinforcement area which is provided with a projection over which one end of the wire is hooked to secure it and after cooling the wire on the body the other end is secured to the first ring or to a second ring at the other end of the area. The rings 11, 12 which are a push fit on the cylinder 10 and are formed by bending and securing the ends by a soldered dovetail joint, are provided with slots 13 which are closed when the wire is coiled thereon so as to grip the cylinder and prevent slipping thereof round the cylinder during coiling which is effected under high tension. Both rings are provided with attachment lugs 14a, 14b in the event of a single layer of wire being applied, but in the event of a double layer in which both ends of the wire are secured to the same ring 11, the ring 12 may have a flange 15. To apply the wire the lugs on the starting ring are first bent upwards and the starting end of the wire is hooked round one lug and given a few turns round the cylinder, whereupon all the lugs except one are bent down over the wire so as to extend beyond the first two turns. The next few turns are coiled over the lugs and preferably soldered in position. Coiling is then continued by rotating the cylinder in a lathe between a chamfered driven sleeve 19 and a tailstock centre 18, the last turn being laid in contact with the upturned flange of the ring 12. The second layer is then coiled and the last turn is tinned and soldered in position before the tension is released and is then hooked at 21b over the lug 14b which is then bent over the last few turns of wire. The end of the coil is then severed. The turns of the reinforcement may then be soldered together and to the cylinder by rotating in a hot solder bath.
