Abstract
544,875. Hydraulic power transmission. VICKERS, Inc., and NYE, H. C. Aug. 19, 1941, No. 10521. [Class 69 (ii)] In a planing, shaping, or broaching machine a feed movement in one direction followed by a rapid traverse movement is obtained from a fixed displacement fluid pump 16 which operates a differential area cylinder and piston motor 10, 12, 14 by means of an outlet pipe 26 connected to the left end of the cylinder 10 and a pipe 40 which can be connected by a valve 32 to a pipe 36 leading to the tank 24 when the piston is to be moved to the right, or the valve can be set to connect the pipe 40 to a pump outlet pipe 28 when the piston is to be moved towards the left. The valve 32 can be set to a neutral position in which the outlet from the pump is byepassed to the tank without operating the motor. During the feed stroke of the piston the action is controlled by a by-pass across the pipes 26, 40 comprising a hydro-static flow-regulating valve 52 of the kind described in Specification 399,609 having an adjustable throttle 54 and a hydro-statically regulated valve 56 which acts to maintain a predetermined pressure drop across the throttle 54. When the valve 32 is set to connect the pipes 28, 40 the flow through the pipes 28, 40 is reinforced by the flow from the left end of the cylinder through pipe 26 and since there is no pressure differential across the pipes 26, 40 there is no flow through the pipes 48, 60.
