544,746. Two-way transmission. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and FAIRLEY,. F. Oct. 24, 1940, No. 15653. [Class 40 (iv)] In a carrier system, a station, Fig. 1, having separate modulating and de-modulating paths M, DM for transmitting and receiving the alternate side-bands of the same carrier frequency co-operates with a second station, 'Fig. 2, provided with a combined modulatordemodulator MD, the carrier frequency being supplied from the first station. The line currents therefore consist of one side-band in one direction and both side-bands in the other direction. In order that the first station may work in conjunction with another station of the same kind, switching means may be provided for changing the filters BF, TDF, RDF in order to transmit either the upper or lower side-band and to receive the other one, and for transmitting or suppressing the carrier. In such an arrangement, a station of the kind shown in Fig. 2 may be connected in shunt at an intermediate point of the line, being supplied with the carrier from the nearer terminal station. At the other terminal station, it may sometimes be preferable to switch out the oscillator O and to amplify the carrier received over the line. Specification 427,605 is referred to.
