Abstract

544,344. Valves ; cylinders. TOMKINS, W. C. Sept. 4, 1940, No. 13842. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Inlet and exhaust passages 20 are controlled by flat slide valves 25 formed with ports 30 and with flanges 26 operating in chambers 24, wedge-shaped packing-washers 31 being split and arranged to expand in corresponding recesses at each side of the valves. A form of grooved cam for actuating the valves is also described. The valves are shown in connection with an engine having an annular rim 17 on the piston meeting a corresponding rim on the cylinder head, and surrounding a cavity 14, which together with an opening 15 in the cylinder end and a cavity 16 in a detachable cover 11, constitutes the combustion chamber.
