Abstract
543,741. Building construction. DAVISON, R. L. June 14, 1940, No. 10398. Convention date, July 12, 1939. [Class 20 (iv)] A wall structural unit comprises a panel with horizontal projecting ribs or brackets which take the load of floors or roof. The panel 14, Figs. 2 and 6, which may be of plywood, is provided with dovetail joints 14a for engagement with adjacent panels, with a stringer 15 to receive and support a floor, and with a window sill assembly 16. The panel is supported on piers 17, and acts as a deep girder. Bolts may pass through the stringer 15 into the pier 17. The floor 23, and false floor 24 are separated by beams 25 and rest on the stringer 15. The floor carries uprights 27 at the corners of the building and at the sides of doors and windows, the uprights being secured to the sill assembly 16. The panels next above are of the same height as the windows, and the uppermost panels 31 are provided with stringers 32 to support the roof and with a lintel assembly 33. The intermediate section may comprise windows only, or filler panels only, or both. The sill assembly 16 acts as the compression member of the girder. The roof units comprise rafter elements 37 connected by cross members 38 and reinforced by side pieces 39. A ceiling panel 40 is provided. Roof panels 41 are provided with locking members 42 which fit over the free edge of the previously positioned panel. Inner panels may be applied against the parts 16a, enclosing a space which may be filled with insulation. Mouldings 45 with conduits for electric wiring may be provided. In modifications, the floor-receiving stringer may be flush with the lower edge of the panel, and rests on the supporting piers, and the roof-receiving stringer may be flush with the upper edge of the panel. The rafter units of the roof rest on the upper edge of the panel and an outer flashing extends down from the roof over the panel edge. The ends of the panels are secured to the uprights, e.g., by gluing. A similar construction is applicable to a multi-story building, intermediate wall panels being provided with floor-supporting stringers, or with spaced brackets. In Fig. 32, flooring boards 71 are supported on joists 70 which rest on stringers 76 carried by the panel. A board 75 extends the panel downward to conceal the foundation. The panel carries also a series of flooring supports 77 extending between the joists. Metal gussets 78 secure the joists 70 to supports 76, and angle plates 82 secure the uprights 79 to plates 80 and to' the foundations 81. Hollow panel units, Fig. 39, are constructed of box form with intermediate spacers, and are provided with window-receiving means 94 and floor-supporting stringers 95. Fig. 44 (not shown), illustrates the connection of a flat roof to a hollow panel unit.
