Abstract
543,687. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1940, No. 17731. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] Phase-unbalance in the line 1 ... 3 is indicated, and protected against, by means of an induction machine 8, the rotor 8' of which has windings 9 ... 11 energized by line transformers such that positive sequence components produce a counter-clockwise rotating field and negative components a clock-wise field. The former field is rendered stationary in space by synchronously roting the rotor 8<SP>1</SP> clock-wise by a motor 15 having its field windings, energized from potential transformer 18<SP>1</SP> in the line and its D.C. rotor 19 on the shaft 19<SP>1</SP> of rotor 8<SP>1</SP>. The resultant double-frequency flux due to negative sequence components produces eddy currents in a slit bimetallic cylinder 20 surrounding the rotor 8<SP>1</SP>, with the result that a contact 22 on its free end engages a contact 24 on an ambient-temperature compensating strip 27. By reversing the connections of two of the windings 3 .. 11, the arrangement may be made responsive to positive sequence components. Voltage unbalance may also be protected against. Specification 159,148, [Class 38 (v)], is referred to.
