[Class 2 (iii)] Resinous condensation products are prepared from aminotriazines, compounds containing alcohol groups, and aldehydes or compounds which yield aldehydes, by re-acting them simultaneously or in any desired order of succession at a temperature below 50‹ C. in the presence of a relatively large proportion of an acid catalyst, i.e. about “ mol. or more of acid catalyst to 1 mol. of the aminotriazine. Under these conditions, etherification proceeds to a considerable degree while polymerization proceeds only to a small extent, and the products can then be subjected to an after-condensation, e.g. at a higher temperature and in the presence of a smaller proportion of acid, to effect further polymerization and, if desired, also the replacment of an alcohol of low molecular weight by a higher alcohol. A diluent may be present, and this may consist of an excess of the alcohol used, or may be an indifferent hydrocarbon, whereby, after neutralization, the separation of the water present and of the salt formed is facilitated. The neutralization may be interrupted when the acid has been rendered ineffective to such a degree that the residual acid just suffices for the after-condensation. Specified aminotriazines. are: melamine, melam, melem, mellon, ammeline, ammelide, foimoguanamine, trimethylmelamine, 2-chloro-4:6- diamino-1:3:5-triazine, 2-(para-oxyphenyl)-4:6- diamono-1:3:5-triazine, 2-phenyl-4-amino-6- oxy-1:3:5-triazine, 2:4:6-trimethylamino- 1:3:5-triazine, 2:4:6-triphenylamino-1:3:5- triazine, and their iso-derivatives. Specified aldehydes are : formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde and furfurol. Specified compounds containing alcohol groups are : methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, lauryl, cetyl, stearyl, allyl, vinyl, benzyl, furfuryl and wool fatty alcohols, cyclohexanol, terpineol, borneol, abietinol, mono- and di-glycerides of saturated or unsaturated higher fatty acids, resin acids or aromatic caboxylic acids, glycol mono-ethyl ether, and condensation products, still containing alcohol groups, which are derived from poly-alcohols and poly-basic carboxylic acids, and 'derivatives thereof modified by monobasic acids. Specified diluents are benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, lacquer benzine and dipentene. Examples are given. The resinous condensation products may be admixed with natural or artificial resins, oils, softening agents, nitrocellulose and acetyl cellulose. They can be used as coating, binding, and impregnating agents, for treating textile materials, and in the production of printing colours. Specifications 486,519 and 486,577 are referred to.
