Abstract
543,292. Stabilisation of oils. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 15, 1940, No. 8694. Convention date, May 19, 1939. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] The darkening in colour of viscous petroleum oils is prevented by the addition of a Schiff's base prepared by condensing an aliphatic polyamine with an aldehyde in such proportions that no more than one aldehyde group is available for each primary amino group. The aliphatic polyamines contain at least two primary amino groups directly attached to different carbon atoms of the same open chain, which chain may contain other elements such as nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur ; e.g. ethylenediamine, 1:2- and 1: 3-propylenediamines, hexa- and deca-methylenediamines, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, di- #-aminoethylether and di- #-aminoethylsulphide. The aldehyde may be aliphatic or aromatic and if substituted, contain only alkoxy, alkyl or aryl radicles; examples given are benzaldehyde and its 2- methyl, - 3-methyl, 4-methyl, 4-phenyl, 2- methoxy and 4-methoxy derivatives, a- and #-naphthaldehydes. propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde and heptaldehyde. The amount of base added is preferably from 0.01 to 0.1 per cent. The oils treated may be heavy fuel oils, lubricating oils, oils used in heat-transfer apparatus and electrical transformers, and greases. Tables are given showing the colour inhibiting effect on an oil of dibenzalethylenediamine in varying concentrations and also of'the effect of dibenzal-hexamethylenediamine, dibenzal-diethylenetriamine, dibenzaltriethylenetetramine, dipropional-ethylenediamine, di-(n-butyral)- ethylenediamine, (di-(nbutyral)-hexamethylenediamine, di-(p-tolual)- propylenediamine and di-(p-anisal)-propylenediamine. Specification 523,451 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use of polvamines containing cyclic substituents, e.g. 1:2-diaminocyclohexane, and of both polyamines and aldehydes containing aryloxy, halogen, heterocyclic, amino, nitro, cyano and carboxyl groups. Moreover as aldehydes, pyridine and quinoline aldehydes are included. Other specific polyamines and aldehydes mentioned are pentaerythrityltetramine and aldol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
