Abstract
543,234. Polyvinyl acetal resin compositions ; triethylene glycol dipelargonate ; polarizing- apparatus ; compound sheet materials. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and MARKS, B. M. Sept. 21, 1940, No. 14430. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XX] Plastic compositions comprise 100 parts by weight of a partial polyvinyl butyral resin containing polyvinyl acetate, 0 to 2 per cent. by weight and polyvinyl alcohol, 17.5 to 22 per cent. by weight, admixed with 43 to 51.5 parts by weight of triethylene glycol dipelargonate. The compositions may be formed into sheets for the surface protection of layers of material such as metal, paper, cloth or wood, or for use as inter-layers in laminated material, e.g. safety glass or light polarizers ; in the latter case, light polarizing crystals are orientated in the inter-layer or a sheet of polarizing material is embedded therein. The sheets may be bonded to the glass by the application of heat and pressure. Triethylene glycol dipelargonate is prepared by reacting triethylene glycol with pelargonic acid in the presence of an esterification catalyst, the reaction being preferably condensed in a solvent vehicle. The product is. refined by distillation in vacuo.
