Abstract

542,935. Button-attaching machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 31, 1940, No. 12390. [Class 112] The free end of the sewing thread is held below the work so that it is enclosed within the stitches of a group securing a button. With a four-hole button, two such groups are used, the thread being cut between the groups. A thread-cutting and end-holding blade 80 slides between a throat plate X and a blade 90 pressed resiliently against the blade 80. A transverse cutting and holding edge 94 on the blade 80 co-operates with a similar edge 90x on the blade 90 and a short longitudinal cutting edge is provided at 96x. The normal stitches of a group are made through the aperture 95 and at the last stitch the blade 80 is moved so that the rotary looper will drag the thread over the edge 96x to sever it. Prior to the commencement of a group, the blade 80 is moved so that the first descent of the needle is in the space 93 and, on the ascent of the needle, the blade 80 is moved back so that the free thread is cut and gripped by the edges 94, 90x. The thread is so held until the last stitch and then the blade 80 is moved to make the edge 96x effective again. In addition to the usual steady tension, intermittent tension and needlebar take-up there are a thread clamp, which is closed during the first stitch of a group, a thread controller, similar to a take-up, which is actuated to draw up some of the thread prior to its being cut and gripped at the first stitch and to pay out the thread for the following stitch, and a device which opens the two normal tensions during the period when the loop-taker is spreading the first thread loop of the cycle. These various devices are operated by cams on a vertical shaft which makes one revolution for two groups of stitches and a cam on this shaft trips the stop gear when the two groups are completed.
