[Class 2 (iii)] Resinous condensation products are produced by re-acting maleic anhydride with one or more primary or secondary amines. Reaction may occur upon admixture or by application of heat and may be a single-stage or two-stage process. Substances giving rise to maleic anhydride, during re-action, may be employed, e.g. maleic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid or ethyl fumarate substitution derivatives of maleic anhydride, e.g. chlormaleic anhydride, may be employed. The re-action may be conducted in presence of a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol or glycol, with or without another polybasic acid. The products may be admixed with other synthetic resins, cellulose derivatives, pigments, fillers, plasticizers &c. The primary or secondary amine may be alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and includes ethanolamine and ethylene diamine ; the secondary amine may be a cycloaliphatic compound containing NH. Examples are given of the production of resinous products from maleic anhydride and butylamine, aniline, ethylene diamine, amylamine-with or without urea-, di-n-butylamine, diphenylamine, morpholine and piperidine.
