Abstract
542,654. Transformers; condensers. HANSELL, J. B., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 20, 1940, No. 11963. Addition to 426,561. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a transformer rendered surge-proof by an arrangement of condensers associated with the windings as described in the parent Specification, each condenser comprises a pair of conducting wires or strips 4, 5, at least one of which has an insulating covering, helically wound on a flat strip of insulating material 2 which is subsequently bent and mounted on supports 21, 22 so that each condenser 25 lies closely adjacent the transformer winding 11. The conductors forming the condenser may be so arranged that they alternate in polarity either along the layers, Fig. 1, or in a radial direction, i.e. from layer to layer, Fig. 3, or both, Fig. 4. In a modification, Fig. 8, each condenser element comprises two condensers in series formed by winding conductors in different zones on the strip support 2 and extending one of the conductors in one zone to form one of the conductors in the other zone, the external connections being made to the non-interconnected conductors of the two zones.
