Abstract
542,182. Electron-oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 22, 1940, No. 12023. Convention date, July 21, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] A device for generating short waves by modulating the rotational velocity of electron stream comprises two sets of split anodes through which the stream passes in succession under the.influence of axial electric and magnetic fields. A beam generated by a gun 1 and accelerated by cylindrical electrodes 3, 5, 7 passes in succession through the split anodes 11, 13, preferably each of half the required wavelength. The anodes are surrounded by a solenoid 30 with extra coils 31 at the end near the gun 1, so that the electrons move in helices the radius of which increases as they pass through the electrodes 3, 5, 7. The anode 11 is supplied with alternating potential from an input source, the period of which is equal to that of rotation of the electrons, or the rotation period may be a multiple of the period desired the anodes being divided into a correspondingly greater number of portions. The retarded electrons move in smaller orbits and are intercepted by a conical electrode 25, while the accelerated electrodes enter the electrode 3 and give up energy to the output circuit 21. The electrodes may be coupled to give feedback. The electrons leaving the electrode 13 are connected by an electrode 27 formed with longitudinal triangular vanes 29.
