Abstract

541,873. Springs frame for cycles. FINLAY, A. D., and FINLAY, R. S. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32798. [Class 136 (iii)] In spring suspension devices for cycles, tubular fork members 24, Fig, 1 and 2, Fig. 4 are provided with spring portions in the form of a flattened length 24a, 2a formed integrally with the members, with the cross-section of the flattened length elongated in a transverse direction, in combination with means for yieldingly opposing flexing of the spring portions. As shown in Fig. 4, for a front fork such yielding opposition is provided by a coiled spring 11 and a rubber buffer 15 arranged at the upper end of two rods 6 which are clamped at their lower ends about metal sleeves 6a, Fig. 7, and a resilient sleeve 4 upon the ends of the wheel axle 3 carried by the fork ends 2a, a pair of links being arranged between crosspins 16, 19. Or the upper ends of the rods 6 may be connected to a transverse pin arranged within a cylindrical rubber buffer. Fig. 1 shows a rearwheel mounting wherein the tubular arms of the lower fork 24 are flattened at 24a to form springs, and are connected to rear stays 27, the upper ends of which are pivoted to shackle links 28 pivoted to the main frames. A cross-piece 32 connects the upper portions of the stays 27, and a coil spring 38 is interposed between an abutment disc 36 on this cross-piece and an abutment disc 37 carried by the main frames. Numerous modified methods of connecting the upper ends of the rear stays 27 to the main frame are described, comprising linked, pivoted, or sliding connections, with coil springs, rubber buffers, or rubber tension springs, supplemented in some cases by frictional shock absorbers.
