Abstract
540,808. Universal joints. REDWOOD, H. J. J., and FREESTON, H. G. July 15, 1940, No. 11694. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint permitting axial, lateral and angular displacement between coupled shafts comprises a member 1 fixed to a shaft 2, a member 3 slidable on pins 6 on a member 4 fixed to a shaft 5, and an intermediate member 7. The latter has two pairs of spigots 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>3</SP>, perpendicular to one another, and the members 1, 3, have spigots 1', 3'. The spigots engage bolts 8 and subtend less than 180 degrees at the bolt axis, the parts being held together by annular caps 9 fixed on the bolts 8 by nuts 10. The spigots 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>3</SP> have end clearance with the caps 9 to permit of lateral movement. Bushes 11 and sleeves 12 are fitted to the bolts 8. Lubricant in lips on the members 1, 4, is fed through ducts to the bushes and sleeves 11, 12, and to the pins 6. Ball or roller bearings may be fitted to the relatively movable parts. Each pair of spigots, such as 1', 7', may have a separate bolt 8, or the bolt may be integral with each cap 9. The pins 6 may be secured to a member splined to and slidable on the shaft 5.
