Abstract

540,790. Cellulose ester effect threads. KAMMER TESTVEREK TEXTILIPAR R. T., and HERMANN, L. Sept. 12, 1939, No. 25665. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1938. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] In the process of immunizing vegetable fibres such as cotton against dyeing by substantive dyestuffs in which the fibres are first alkalized and then esterified by sulphonic acid halides of the aromatic series such as p-toluene sulphochloride, the esterification is conducted by saturating the alkalized thread with a cold solution of the halide in an organic solvent such as carbon tetrachloride and then heating the saturated thread for some hours in the air at over 100‹C. In this manner the quantity of halide required for the treatment is economized. The excess halide solution adhering to the fibre may be removed by centrifuging, and the treatment may be carried out on the bobbin, preferably cross wound and somewhat compressed, in a container through which air currents may be passed for recovery of the solvent. A 12-15 per cent solution of the halide may be employed. The process can be employed for the protection of already coloured threads against later taking up of dyestuff.
