Abstract

539,622. Digesters. PORTEOUS, W. K. April 20, 1940, No. 7166. [Class 64 (i)] [Also in Group I] Sewage sludge or similar sludge is treated in one of a battery of at least three treatment vessels with steam at a pressure of at least 150 lbs. per square inch and a temperature of at least 340‹F., preferably 350‹ to 380‹F, while another of the vessels is being filled and treated sludge is discharged from a third vessel and partially cooled in a heat recuperator. Each steam-treatment vessel 36 has a conical lower end with connections for the supply and discharge of sludge, controlled by valves 41, 42 which may be operated in time relation by an electric motor 45. Steam is supplied through a pipe 51 to an upwardly projecting pipe 40 the lower end of which is fitted with an injector 52 through which sludge from the vessel is circulated by means of pipes 49. A supply of steam is maintained during the supply and discharge of the sludge and discharge of sludge is stopped before the vessel is completely emptied.
