Abstract
539,509. Coloured photographic images. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Jan. 11, 1940, No. 602. [Class 98 (ii)] In the production of a coloured photographic image in an exposed silver salt emulsion containing a dye capable of being de-colourized by reduction by means of the silver dye-bleaching process, the image-forming dye, after development but without fixing, is bleached locally in a single bath which contains free acid and a mild oxidizing agent whereby it dissolves all silver salt and silver in the layer. The dye image may be produced with a pre-determined contrast by the selection of a suitable amount of mild oxidizing agent. The dye is preferably an azo dye, and the free acid may be hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydroiodic, nitric, or phosphoric acid. The oxidizing agents include ferric chloride, potassium ferricyanide, ammonium vanadate, vanadyl chloride, potassium nitrate, and soluble nitro or nitroso compounds or azo dyes. Catalysts such as 2-hydroxy-3-aminophenazine or 2:3-dimethylquinoxaline may be used. Numerous examples of dye-destruction baths are given, all of which include potassium thiocyanate or thiourea. The dyes for a threelayer film may be (a) the yellow dye from tetrazotized tolidine-disulphonic acid coupled with 2-chloro-5-hydroxytoluene, (b) the magenta dye from tetrazotized 2:5:2<SP>1</SP>:5<SP>1</SP>-tetraethyl-4:4<SP>1</SP>-diaminotriphenylmethane coupled with acetyl H-acid, and (c) a blue-green dye whose preparation is given.
