Abstract
539,263. Firebricks. SOC. ANON. DES HAUTSFOURNEAUX DE LA CHIERS. Nov. 13, 1939, No. 29971. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1938. [Class 22] Firebricks are made by reducing calcined lime or dead-fritted dolomite to the form of sharpedged grains of a size of about 1-5 mm., separating the grains according to size by screening, mixing the grains of different sizes in suitable proportions, moulding the mixture in the dry state to form bricks and baking the bricks preferably in an oxidizing atmosphere, the whole of these operations from the time when the material is calcined or fritted to the time when it enters the baking kiln being carried out with such rapidity that the material does not cool down to such an extent that it can be changed by the atmosphere. Iron oxide or chromium oxide may be added before the grinding. The proportion of grains of a size of 1-3 mm. may be from 50-75 per cent. while that of grains of a size 3-5 mm. may be from 50-25 per cent. The time taken should not exceed 8 hours, or the temperature of the brick should not be below 30‹ C. when it enters the baking kiln.
