Abstract
539,079. Steering endless-track vehicles by differential driving. BOUNSALL, H. R. April 13, 1940, No. 6737. [Class 79 (ii)] Each track sprocket H of an endless-track vehicle is driven through a separate epicyclic reducing gear train of which the sun pinion B is positively driven through bevel gearing A from the main gear-box S, the toothed annulus is fixed to the sprocket, and the planet carrier E is normally held stationary by a brake O. Steering is effected by slowing down the drive on the side to which the vehicle is to turn, and for this purpose the brake O on that side is released and the corresponding planet carrier E is driven through a' double differential gear M in the required direction. In the construction shown the differential gear is driven through worm gear R and a multi-plate clutch T from the layshaft S<SP>2</SP> of the gear-box S. The inner ,and outer co-axial planet wheels of the differential gear are fixed on their radial shafts, the outer sun wheels are fixed to the brake drums O, and the inner sun wheels are geared to the planet carriers E. Thus, when the steering lever (not shown) is operated to release one brake or the other and to engage the clutch T, the differential carrier rotates about the sun pinion which is still held by its brake and the sun pinions on the side on which the brake has been released are rotated and drive the corresponding planet carrier E to slow down the track on this side so that the vehicle is steered. The drive to the other track is unaffected.
