Abstract
538,839. Knitting. BOOTON, Ltd., W. E., and BOOTON, W. E. Feb. 16, 1940, No. 2945. [Class 74 (ii)] A two - feed circular machine knits a stocking &c. blank having alternate courses of the leg formed of different threads and the toe pocket linkage line formed in the foot bottom. The heel pocket h is knitted by reciprocation upon one group of needles at one feed, and the toe pocket t is formed by reciprocation by an opposed group of needles at the other feed. The stocking blank is knitted from the toe upwards, the toe being knitted upon the instep needles LB at one feed 2, and after the heel has been knitted upon short butted needles SB at the other feed 1, the leg is knitted at both feeders by the needles LB, SB and intermediate needles MB. During rotary knitting of the lower part of the leg, needles SBx with still shorter butts are retained out of operation, and the yarns are floated between the ends of the two groups SB. For fashioning, the needles SBx are introduced at each end of the already operating needles, and to permit needles to be picked successively from the trailing end of a group of needles, picker mechanism as described in Specification 537,965 is provided. This picker mechanism operates upon jacks arranged beneath the needles, and similar picker mechanism is employed to introduce needles successively for forming shaped splicing areas. These areas are knitted by the short butted heeling needles SB and by the intermediate needles MB, and a picker mechanism may be provided at each feeding position to introduce the splicing needles. As described, a picker mechanism for introducing the fashioning needles to the operative path is provided only at the feeder 2. Mock fashioning marks i, k may be formed by tucking on needles equidistant from the needles introduced by the picker mechanism. Upon completion of the leg, when all of the needles SBx have been introduced, at least one reinforced course l is produced, followed by a picot edge and a welt n. The blank having been completed, the floating threads are cut away, and the toe pouch is linked to the foot bottom and the edges of the foot and leg are seamed along a line which extends upward from the toe linking line to the course l. The seam so formed may be continued as a mock seam through the tubular part of the stocking.
