Abstract
538,765. Grinding. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HASSLER, E. H. H. Feb. 12, 1940, Nos. 2658/40 and 1965/41. [Class 60] [Also in Groups XXII and V] In a method of and apparatus for producing tapering curved surfaces generated by a line moving so that two points thereon each describe a different curve, the work, part of which is shown at 1, Fig. 1, is fixed while the tool carrier is free to swing around and move axially along a pivotal axis 3 while being guided by two contour plates 4, 5 which correspond to different cross sections of the work. The work piece may be of plastic form and have its surface generated by a strickle bar 2 which is free to move in a slot 3a of the pivot pin 3. In a modification Figs. 2 and 3, adapted for shaping the work by milling or grinding the tool carrier consists of a frame including guide bars 6 and end members 7, 8, the latter having a bearing 9 slidable along a stationary pivot pin 3. The member 7 carries rollers 11, 12 running on separate contour plates 5, 13. The frame is also guided by a knife edge member 14 moving over a contour plate 4. The grinding wheel 17 is mounted on a carriage 16 which is adjustable about the axis of one of the bars 6 by a screw 21 in order to feed the tool to the work. The carriage 16 is also traversed along the arms 6 to cover the surface of the work. In a modification the pivot 3 is omitted and separate means may be provided for reciprocating each end of the tool carrying arm such as by separately adjustable variable-throw cranks. In some cases the work may be bounded by closed curves the work being machined first on one side and then on the other in the manner described above.
