Abstract
538,757. Two-part couplings. BURROWS, H. Jan. 13, 1940, No. 770. [Class 38 (i)] A plug and socket coupling has split plug contacts formed as or associated with bi-metallic or other heat responsive elements so arranged that if heat is developed owing to faulty contact, the pressure between the interengaged parts is increased. The split plug, Fig. 1, may be formed of a central layer 1 of one metal and outer layers 2, 3 of a metal having a lower co-efficient of expansion so that the prongs 4, 5 move apart on heating. Alternatively a bimetallic strip may be placed between the prongs so that by its curvature on heating it forces the prongs apart. The plug may be formed from a bi-metallic blank, Fig. 3, bent to form contact prongs 4, 5 that move apart on heating. According to the Provisional Specification a socket may be similarly constructed, the parts moving towards one another on heating, a coupling having a pair of contacts may have each of them formed of a single bi-metallic strip so that the two contacts move towards or away from one another on heating, or a pair of sockets may be moved relatively by a bi-metallic member.
