Abstract
538,703. Distant reading compasses. KELVIN, BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD, Ltd., and HOATHER, W. H. May 15, 1940, No. 8716. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A coil or coils 1 is or are intermittently subjected to the earth's field by a rotating or oscillating screen 3 of high permeability and the generated A.C. is indicated by a sensitive instrument 2. The A.C. may be rectified or the instrument 2 may be connected to the coil by a switch during alternate half cycles. The single coil system shown is subject to a 180 degrees error but a system using cross coils at the transmitting and receiving instruments, Fig. 2 (not shown), or three or more coils is free from this defect. A number of receivers may be operated from a single transmitter ; amplifiers may be used, and the screen may have a rectilinear movement. The transmitter is suspended in gimbals to avoid errors due to the vertical component of the field.
