[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] A circuit such as a welding circuit is closed for a pre-determined adjustable time by sending a current impulse through the winding 15 of an electromagnetic switch, the armature 16 of which moves so as to bring contacts 2 into engagement with fixed contacts 1; the momentum of the armature carries it further while a spring 11 is strained, the spring then expands again and armature and contacts 2 move again as a unit to break the circuit. The contacts 2 are carried on an equalizing bar 5 pivoted to a member 7 pivoted at 8 to an arm 9 on the shaft carrying the armature and the spring 11 normally causes the arm 7 to engage a stop to hold armature and contacts against relative rotation. The spring 11 may be adjusted to vary the time during which the contacts are closed. The impulse to the electromagnet 15 is produced by operation of a switch 24 which causes a condenser 23 to discharge through the magnet and a valve 26 at a particular point of the A.C. cycle determined by the condition of the grid 26b.
