538,310. Methacrylic anhydride. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Jan. 26,1940, No. 1638. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Methacrylic anhydride is made by treating a methacryl halide with a salt of methacrylic acid, e.g. sodium methacrylate, or by treating methacrylic acid with acetic anhydride, if desired in the presence of an interchange catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid. Examples are given. When heated, the product polymerizes to an infusible resin; co-polymers with other compounds containing a CH 2 -group, such as methyl methacrylate, are useful for making optical bodies.
