Abstract
538,191. Vitamins. EMULSIONS PROCESS CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1940, Nos. 1205 and 1206. Convention dates, May 11, 1939 and Oct. 7, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VI] Yeast cells are broken to release the contents to obtain a vitamin rich extract suitable as a human food or as a food for yeast, by submitting yeast mixed with water to pressure in presence of carbon dioxide, and spraying the gas-impregnated yeast into a vessel which may be evacuated. Brewers' yeast, which may be washed with ammonium persulphate &c. to kill bacteria and may be activated by treating it with a sterile wort is forced by a pump 3 through a cooler 4 which cools it to about 0‹C. and is mixed in a dispersion unit 5 with carbondioxide under pressure from a container 6. The carbonated yeast is passed by a pump 7 which raises its pressure to 1,000-3,000 pounds per square inch, through a heater 8 which heats it to about 30-49 ‹C. and is discharged through a spray head 25 into a tank 9 which may be held under vacuum. Gas is withdrawn 'by a pump 10 compressed and returned to the container 6. The liquid withdrawn from the tank 9 may be filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The carbonated yeast may before submission to high pressure be stored for some hours in a tank 6a.
