537,585. Vertical retort settings. GAS CHAMBERS & COKE OVENS, Ltd., and LYMN, A. H. Dec. 20, 1939, No. 32592. [Class 51 (ii)] In a setting for vertical retorts the heating gases after heating part of one or more retorts are collected in the first of a series of two or more superposed horizontal flues connected to each other and to a common waste gas flue through dampered openings. Fig. 1 shows a retort setting having vertical heating flues 3 leading to superposed flues 6, 9, 15 having communicating openings 4, 7, 13 controlled by dampers 5, 8, 14 each of the superposed flues being connected to the common waste gas flue 10 by dampered-openings. The heating of the retorts may be carried out in an upward or downward direction through vertical or horizontal flues, the collecting flues being arranged at the top or bottom of the setting.
