Abstract

537,493. Lifeboats. FLEMING, I. R., and FLEMING, F. E. Dec. 23, 1939, Nos. 32821/39 and 4922/40. [Class 113 (i)] To improve the stability and buoyancy of lifeboats particularly those of standard dimension the seating capacity of which has been increased by arrangements such as are described in Specification 517,147, buoyant sheathing is detachably secured to the sides of the boat and comprises kapok mattresses 10 stiffened by longitudinal battens 12 and vertical bands 11 which terminate in hooks 14 engaging with staples secured to the gunwale. The sheaths are attached by lanyards 16 to eye bolts 17 in the keel. In a modification metal plating is spaced from the hull by thwart ship ribs attached to the hull and the intervening spaces are filled with buoyant material.
