Abstract
536,545. Wireless signalling apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 13, 1940, No: 2767. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] Apparatus operating at ultra-high frequency so that leads are an appreciable fraction of a wavelength in length, is connected by means which reproduce at the terminals of the apparatus the appropriate voltage. Fig. 2 shows the connection of a device 23 which may be a generator or a diode valve to a transmission line 11, 13 associated with an aerial 9 in which the physical size of the apparatus is large compared with the spacing of. the line. A second aerial 29 and line 31, 33 is energized to give similar standing waves and the spacing between the lines 11, 13 and 31, 33 is adjusted so that the device 23 may be connected with minimum length of lead. The lines may be terminated in a metal plate 15 and current leads may be brought out through the line conductor or through a small tube fastened to it. The aerials may be spaced half a wavelength apart in which case the apparatus is connected to the two corresponding lines, Fig. 4 (not shown). Fig. 5 shows an arrangement in which the length of conductor internal to the diode forms part of the transmission line on which standing waves are produced. An adjustable tuning section 47 enables the effect of inter-electrode capacity to be compensated, while the use of a half wave resonant section 49 ensures that the anode is connected to the point of maximum potential. A condenser 51 is provided in the line so that output may be taken from terminals 55. Instead of a series connected tuning section, a tuning section may be provided in parallel to the apparatus, Fig. 6 (not shown), and a similar tuning section may be provided in the other side of the line to improve the balance. Fig. 7 shows a half wave resonant section 49 used to connect the diode anode to the line and placed at an angle to a section 63 chosen to match the impedance of the rectifier to the line and adjust the sensitivity and selectivity.
