534,292. Change-speed gear. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd.. J. I., and BURTON, C. E. Oct. 6, 1939. No. 27348. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a motor vehicle having an auxiliary twospeed gear-box 3 through which two shafts or axles 1, 2 can be driven, the drive on one gear ratio being to one shaft 2 only, the drive on the other gear ratio is transmitted first to one of the two shafts and then to the other without disengaging the drive to the first shaft. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the lay-shaft 5 of the auxiliary gear is driven from the main gear-box (not shown) through a shaft 6 and gear 6a. The shaft 2 carries a double sliding gear 4a, 4b splined thereon, and when this gear is slid to the right from the neutral position shown the gear 4b engages the gear 5b and the shaft 2 is driven at the high-speed ratio. When the double gear is slid to the left the gear 4a engages a wide gear 5a and the shaft 2 is driven at a low-speed ratio ; further movement of the double gear to the left causes dogs 4c to engage dogs 1a on the shaft 1 and drive this shaft without the drive to the shaft 2 being disengaged. In a modification a single sliding gear is used on the shaft 2 and an additional gear loose on this shaft is always in mesh with the gear 5b.
