Abstract
534,119. Piston-rings. HALL, C. G. Dec. 28. 1939, No. 32974. [Class 122 (i)] The face 8 of a piston-ring 4, that is exposed to the fluid pressure, is formed with passages 9, so that full-width portions of the ring are exposed to the pressure, and the opposite face 8' is inclined. The increased pressure on the upper face of the ring co-operates with the incline in forcing the ring outwards against the cylinder wall. The fluid also reaches a clearance 10 at the back of the ring, whereby the outward pressure is increased. The upper face of the ring may be inclined in the opposite direction to the face 8<1>, so that the change in the direction of the fluid flow across the top of the ring is less abrupt. The passages 9 may be formed in the piston instead of in the ring.
