533,842. Porous metals. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 19, 1939, No. 14972. Convention date, May 20, 1938. [Class 70] Porous metal for use as bearings, clutch facings &c. consists of iron, a soft metal insoluble in iron, such as lead, bismuth or cadmium and graphite. It may contain metals such as copper, nickel or tin, which alloy with the iron. The metals and graphite in powder form are mixed together. Small additions of a lubricant such as stearic acid or zinc stearate may be made, and the mixture is briquetted under pressure. The briquettes are sintered by heating under non- oxidizing conditions to a temperature below the melting point of iron but above that of the added metal. In making clutch facings, a refractory abrasive such as asbestos, silica or alumina may be added to the powdered materials.
