Abstract
533,268. Milling cutters; tool-holders. LLOYD & CO., Ltd., R. (Apex Tool & Cutter Co., Inc.). Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28719. [Class 83 (iii)] A milling-cutter, lathe tool or other cutting- tool of the inserted blade type comprises a tool body 1 having one or more longitudinally tapering slots 3 of dovetail cross section and with bottom surfaces 4 which are inclined to the tool axis, the slots being filled with cutting- blades 7 and longitudinally tapered wedges 8, both wedge and blade being of taper cross section, Fig. 4, and forming an assembly which completely fits and fills the slot the sloping bottom of which permits simultaneous adjustment both of the end cutting-edges 13 and the side cutting-edges 12. The slots are machined to radial planes of the body and taper inwardly from their outer ends. The bottoms 4 of the slots are also inclined to the general plane of the cutter body. The blade may be either parallel or taper in the longitudinal direction so long as the combined longitudinal sections of blade and wedge correspond to the longitudinal section of the slot. If desired, transverse serrations may be provided on the contacting surfaces of the blade and slot wall the serrations being perpendicular to the slot base to provide step by step adjustment of the blade. The contacting surfaces between the blade and wedge and between the wedge and slot wall may also be serrated or roughened. In a modification, Fig. 10, the slots extend axially across the cutter periphery and the co-acting surfaces of the blades 7 and slot wall are formed with serrations 14 for step-by-step blade adjustment. The coacting surfaces between blade and wedge may also be serrated or roughened. Specification 396,491 is referred to.
