Abstract
532,541. Metal-vapour apparatus. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Aug. 21, 1939, No. 24075. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] In metal-vapour rectifiers having metal envelopes, the envelope is closed by an insulator 4 preferably of porcelain which is shaped so as to form a container for the cathode liquid 3, such as mercury, and also provide the insulation for the leading-in conductors to the cathode, anode or anodes 1, anode grid 8 exciting anode 7, and igniting anode 10. As shown, the insulator is formed as a cup containing the cathode liquid and has a central tubular extension through which passes the conductor 2 for the anode, the external contact of which is formed by a cap 20 welded to the conductor. The cathode leadin is formed by one or more bores 43 filled with mercury and closed by a contact ring 44. The leads to the electrodes 7, 8 pass through bores in the central column of the insulator and terminate in contact caps. The exciting electrode 10 is carried by an iron rod 9 floating in a mercury pool, and actuated by an electro-magnet 90. The envelope comprises two metal parts 5, 6 welded together, the part 6 being fitted tightly around the insulator. All the joints between the metal envelope and contact members are sealed with a layer of enamel or other moleculary adhering layer. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, number of anodes are disposed in recesses in the insulator arranged around a central cup containing the cathode liquid.
