Abstract
532,490. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1939, No. 25077. Convention date, Sept 3, 1938. [Class 38 (v) A bi-metallic switch, primarily for connecting in series with the electrodes of arc discharge lamps, comprises a support 12 on which a heater coil 17 is mounted by conductors 13, 16 and a pair of co-operating contact members 19, 22 bearing contacts 24, 23, both .members 19, 22 being bi-metallic, and are or both having a part 50 curved round the heater coil 17 in close relation thereto. In the example shown one bi-metallic contact member 19, is spring biassed to follow the one 22 directly subjected to the heat of the coil 17 for a distance to delay the opening of the switch. The portion 21 of the strips 22 is initially unaffected by the coil 17 but later moves in a direction to add to the deflection of the contact 23. In a modification each has a curved portion round a heater, the heaters being of high and low wattage respectively. One or both strips may have a complete helical turn, one or both encircling a heater, and the heater may have a ceramic casing. The contacts may be of silver alloy to enable them to weld together temporarily to delay the breaking of the circuit. The switch may be enclosed in an atmosphere of gas at about 4 mm. pressure,
