Abstract
532,046. Railway rail joints. BOURGEOIS, J. J. A. Aug. 14, 1939, No. 23429. [Class 104 (ii)] A rail joint comprises at least one fishplate 3, connecting the rails in the horizontal direction, and at least one transverse plate 5 connected by welding &c. to 3 and to one of the rails, the plate 5 being deformable in the axial direction of the rails to permit of expansion and contraction of the rails. The plate 5 may be split into three parts 5a, 5b, 5e, the outer parts being welded to the fishplates 3, 4, the middle part to the rail 2. The fishplate 3 may be welded to the rail 1 and bolted to rail 2. If two plates 5 are used, they may be connected at the lower ends and shaped at the upper ends to form a sleeper. The longitudinal member 3 may be connected to the plates 5 at the lower ends of the latter, and the whole enclosed in a casing sunk in the ballast. In another form, the plate 3 is vertically arranged between the rails in the axial direction, and is connected at its upper edge to the rail flanges and at its lower edge to the plates 5. A pivotal connection between the rails may be provided. In another form, plate 3 is a bent bar fixed to the underside of one rail and then bent downwards and pivoted at the other end to the plates 5, which are also pivoted to the base of the other rail. The plates 5 may be connected to the rail ends by reinforcing members carried thereby. In another form, the plates 5 are slightly inclined to the vertical, and in another form, they are used in pairs.
