Abstract

531,961. Regulating exhaustion. HEYWOOD, C. F. July 8, 1939, No. 19919. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] The exhaustion of a vessel by a compressor drawing from it, or by a vacuum pump, is stopped when a desired degree of vacuum is reached and the pump caused to draw from atmosphere or from another vessel by use of an air admission &c. valve 12 having a guided plunger stem acted on by a spring, and having a bellows 18 or diaphragm connecting it with the casing. Atmospheric air has access on the outer side of the bellows, while the inner side is subject to the vacuum in the vessel through passages 20, 21 in the casing and stem and ports in the stem guide. When the desired vacuum is attained, by the pump suction through an adjustable lift valve 6, the valve 12 is raised from its seat allowing air admission to the pump from atmosphere &c. and closing the valve 6.
