Abstract

530,216. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gluhlampen). June 30, 1939, No. 19108. [Class 39 (i)] In a source of light or ultra-violet radiation comprising a high pressure metal vapour discharge lamp and an incandescent filament in series with the discharge and providing the substantial or the whole of the stabilising impedance (i) the filament 4 in full operation does not absorb more than 40 per cent of the applied R.M.S. voltage, (ii) the H.P.M.V. lamp is one wherein (a) the distance L between the electrodes 5 does not exceed 5 mm. and is not greater than their mean distance from the envelope; (b) the mean internal diameter of the approximately spherical envelope 3 does not exceed 15 mm. ; (c) W/L exceeds 200 watt/cm, W being the power in the discharge at full operation ; (d) W/S exceeds 20 watt/sq. cm. S being the internal surface area of the envelope ; (e) the vapour pressure in full operation exceeds 25 atmospheres. As shown the lamp and filament are enclosed in an outer envelope 2 which may be frosted or have a luminescent coating 7; or it may be of material permeable to U.V. A filling of argon and nitrogen may be used in the outer envelope. The discharge envelope 3 may be filled with argon at a pressure up to 400 mm. and mercury which is all evaporated in full working. Current and voltages of a specific construction are given.
