Abstract
530,128. Submarine vessels. ZULVER, C. June 16, 1939, No. 17680. [Class 113 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] An emergency air disribution system for submarines comprises one or more distribution boxes 2 attached to the inside of the hull of the submarine and each connected by pipes 12 to various compartments or tanks to which air is required to be directed, each box 2 having a main connection 9 for an external air supply and valves for controlling the passage of air to the pipes 12. The other ends of the pipes connected to tanks or compartments not usually occupied by the crew are fitted with non-ceturn valves and the pipes connected to crew's quarters are fitted with stop valves. The valves in the distributing boxes 2 may be ordinary non-return valves or stop valves, or may be combined non-return and stop valves as shown, consisting of a valve 39 having a tubular extension 41 surrounding the head 42 of the valve spindle 43 threaded through the box 2 and operable by a wrench applied to its squared end 46. The valve may be positively held closed by operating the spindle 43 so that the head 42 bears on an internal shoulder 47 in the extension 41. When the head 42 is spaced from the shoulder, the valve acts as a non-return valve, being free to open against the action of a spring 49. The connection 9 and box are normally sealed by covers 8 and 6, which are removed by a diver.
