Abstract
529,943. Spike extractors. WILLIAMS, Ltd., H., and WILLIAMS, O. M. June 13, 1939, No. 17236. [Class 61 (iii)] A tool for extracting in two or more stages a railway spike of the kind having a springy bent part 5 and a toe 7 bearing on the rail flange comprises a lever 8 with spaced projections 10, 11 near the end of the lever and on the same side of it adapted to te engaged with the spike head as shown in Fig. 1 to relieve the curved part 5 of strain ; a projection 12 on the other side of the lever is then engaged under ,the bent part 5 for withdrawing the spike as shown in Fig. 2 by a levering action about the forward end of the tool. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, for removing a spike forward of two adjacent links one with the curved part 5 and the other with a bent over end 14 the strain in the curved part is first relieved by abutment members 15, 16 extending across the forked end of the lever 20 ; in a second operation the spike is raised somewhat by a curved projection 19 inserted below the curved part and the extraction of the spike is completed by means of a projection 17 using a projection 18 of the end of the lever as a fulcrum.
