529,641. Weighing-apparatus. CREIGHTON, C. R., and WATERS, D. B. May 22, 1939, No. 15228. [Class 143] Relates to apparatus for delivering weighed quantities of viscous liquids, of the kind wherein a filled weigh hopper with a valve-controlled outlet is caused, by a reduction of the balancing means, to discharge liquid until the reduced balancing means moves the weigh hopper and closes the outlet. According to the invention in order to avoid errors due to the viscosity of the liquid the same balancing conditions under which the weigh hopper reaches equilibrium during filling and after discharge are obtained by closing the outlet in each case whilst liquid is passing through. As shown, the weigh hopper 6 is in balance with a small residual quantity of liquid therein, the outlet valve 8, carried by fixed arms 9, 10, being closed and the scale pan 4 being empty. A weight 5 equal to the liquid charge required is placed on the scale pan and liquid run in, for example, through a cock 12. When the liquid overbalances the weight 5 and runs past the valve the cock is closed, the liquid running to waste until the weigh hopper rises and closes the valve. The weight 5 is now removed and the liquid run out until the hopper rises sufficiently to close the outlet. Means may be provided for performing the operations automatically.
