Abstract

528,593. Drills. JESSOP & SONS, Ltd., W., and LAMBERT, J. G. May 10, 1939, Nos. 13919 and 25067. [Class 83 (iii)] A rotary drill bit for rock, coal &c. of the kind having two or more blades separated by a U-shaped gap, has a face or faces in the gaps remote from the cutting edges and inclined to the axis of the bit so as to engage the core or cores and break them into pieces by a transverse or side-ways pressure. In one form the bit has wings 3 tipped at 8 with tungsten carbide &c. and the central part has an inclined face 5 for breaking away the core 6 left by the wings. The face 5 is preferably inclined at 45 degrees to the axis of the bit and instead of being formed on the body it may be formed on a separate piece located by flats &c. on the body and having a stem entering a hole therein. In a modified construction, the body 1, Figs. 8 and 11, has inner wings 3 and outer wings 9, the central core 6 being broken periodically by the inclined surface 5 and the annular core 12 being broken by a member 11 on the body 1. The outer wings 9 and member 11 may be formed integral with the body 1 or may constitute a separate unit on a base 13 having a central aperture to receive the stem 2 of the body and a transverse slot 14 to engage a rib on the body. The member 11 may be formed as a stud mounted in a hole in the base 13.
