Abstract
528,574. Sensitized photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). March 30, 1939, No. 9896. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Dyes of the cyanine type are made by condensing phthalic anhydride or succinic anhydride with a cyclammonium salt containing a reactive alkyl group, and a nuclear oxygen, sulphur or selenium atom. The condensation is effected in the presence of pyridine, with or without triethylamine. The products may be incorporated in photographic silver halide emulsions to act as light filters or sensitizers. In examples, dyes are made from (1) phthalic anhydride and (a) 2-methylbenzthiazole methiodide or ethiodide (b) 2-methyl-#-naphthathiazole etho - p - toluenesulphonate, (c) 2 - methylthiazoline ethiodide, (d) 2-methylbenzselenazole ethiodide and (e) 2-methylbenzoxazole ethiodide, and (2) from succinic anhydride and 2-methylbenzthiazole ethiodide. The products contain a carboxyphenyl or carboxyethyl group attached to the middle carbon atom of the methine chain. The carboxy groups may be esterified; examples are given of the esterification of some of the products with methyl and ethyl alcohols. Spectrograms of some of the dyes in gelatino-silver bromide or chloride emulsions are given.
