Abstract

527,884. Forging bolts etc.; drawing wire. B-W MANUFACTURING CO. April 22, 1939, No. 12169. Convention date, June 27, 1938. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A heading-machine is provided with a sizing die, O, Fig. 3, a main feeder N for drawing stock therethrough and advancing it a predetermined amount, and an intermittently operated auxiliary feeder P for pushing the forward end portion of the stock through the die and into engagement with the main feeder. The machine is fitted with heading dies B<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>3</SP>, Figs. 1, 20, mounted one above the other on a slide B<SP>1</SP> adapted to reciprocate vertically in a head B reciprocated horizontally by a crank or eccentric from a driving shaft E geared by wheels G, G<SP>1</SP> of 1 : 2 ratio to a shaft G<SP>2</SP> actuating the slide B<SP>1</SP> and the feeding, shearing and transferring mechanism. The slide B<SP>1</SP> is operated to place alternately the two dies in the heading position by a cam G<SP>5</SP> engaging rollers K<SP>2</SP> on a slotted member K mounted on a bearing K<SP>1</SP> and connected to an arm K<SP>3</SP> on a rock shaft K<SP>4</SP> with an arm K<SP>5</SP> coupled to the slide. The cam gives a dwell at each end of the movement. A frame L, Figs. 1-3, connected at one end to the press bed and supported at the other end by a pivoted link L<SP>4</SP>, comprises slideways L<SP>2</SP>, L<SP>3</SP> for the feeders arranged on opposite sides of a die holding section L<SP>1</SP>. The feeders comprise slides surrounding gripping jaws N<SP>4</SP> actuated by the slides to grip the stock in one direction of movement. The feeder N is actuated by links M<SP>3</SP> pivoted to arms M<SP>2</SP> on shafts M interconnected by gears I, I<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 19, the gear I being oscillated by a crank disc G<SP>3</SP> on shaft G<SP>2</SP> through the link H<SP>2</SP> and lever H<SP>4</SP>. Pins H, H<SP>3</SP> are adjustable radially. The arms M<SP>2</SP> may be accurately positioned on the shafts M by utilizing the reversibility of the keys M<SP>4</SP> or by adjusting the bolts M<SP>5</SP>. The feeder P is actuated by the feeder N by means of rods P<SP>1</SP> surrounded by springs P<SP>4</SP> and fitted with adjustable sleeves P<SP>2</SP>. A stop-screw Q<SP>9</SP> limits the movement of the feeder under the action of springs P<SP>4</SP>. The feeder P may be manually actuated through rack and pinion gear Q<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>3</SP>, Q<SP>6</SP>, and may be locked in position shown in Fig. 3 by a cam lever Q<SP>7</SP>. The jaws of the feeders may be separated and locked in this position by means of levers R<SP>8</SP>, R<SP>9</SP> each adapted to rotate a wheel R, Fig. 8, to raise a rack R<SP>2</SP> with a cam portion R which engages a roller R<SP>5</SP> on sleeve R<SP>6</SP> to move the sleeve to effect movement of the jaws against the springs. The cam is formed with a locking notch R<SP>7</SP>. During the initial operation of the feeder P the stock is prevented from return movement by a fixed shoe S\ Fig. 1, and a co-operating, manually operable, cam shoe S<SP>2</SP>. Bent or fouled stock may be removed from the machine by adjusting the screws P<SP>5</SP> to force the feeder jaws on to the stock and then operating the slide P by hand. The friction in the die O, Fig. 3, is sufficient to prevent return movement of the stock during feeding but when the end of a length of stock has left the die a split bush T may be tightened on the stock, by means of a handle T<SP>3</SP>, to prevent return. The stop mechanism for the stock comprises a resilient member U, Fig. 1, mounted on an adjustable screw U<SP>1</SP> and permits the stock to be overfed, the member U, reinforced by a stop U<SP>2</SP> on the slide B, moving the stock slightly rearwardly when released. To allow for this movement the die 0 is loosely mounted in a fixed holder and is gripped by a friction shoe, and is capable of longitudinally rearward movement limited by screws O<SP>7</SP>. In a modification the member U<SP>2</SP> is replaced by a rigid arm containing a spring pressed stop. The shear and transfer member J<SP>5</SP>, Fig. 1, is mounted on a slide J<SP>4</SP>, having a pin J<SP>3</SP> engaged by a cam slot J<SP>2</SP> in a slide J<SP>1</SP> moved by a crank disc G<SP>4</SP> on shaft G<SP>2</SP>. A resilient clip J, Fig. 14 (not shown), on the shear member retains the blank when sheared until it is. transferred to the stationary heading die.
