Abstract

526,960. Textile lubricants. KILBURN, B. E. D. (National Oil Products Co.). March 24, 1939, No. 9359. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] In the production of sulphonated fatty materials, a crude sulphonation mass comprising sulphonated animal, vegetable or marine oils, fats or fatty acids is dispersed in at least an equal volume of a substantially anhydrous organic solvent, the mass is then neutralized, the precipitated salts are removed, and finally the solvent and residual moisture are removed by distillation. The neutralization is effected by a concentrated aqueous solution of an alkali, or by a solution of alkali in an organic solvent preferably used in taking up the sulphonation mass. The solvent used may comprise an alcohol, ether, ketone, hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, the following being specified :-ethyl and isopropyl alcohols, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, petroleum ether, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isopropyl ketone. A large number of vegetable and animal oils and fats and marine oils is specified as suitable for the sulphonation. Examples are given of the sulphonation of olive oil, castor oil, sperm oil, olive oil and oleic acid. The products are substantially anhydrous and salt-free, and may be blended with vegetable, animal or mineral oils or waxes, or with other substances such as fatty alcohols and fatty esters, to produce compositions suitable for the treatment of textile materials, leather and paper. Examples of such compositions include (1) mixtures of sulphonated olive oil, raw olive oil and white mineral oil, or sulphonated teaseed oil, white mineral oil and sperm oil, or sulphonated sperm oil and white mineral oil, for softening and lubricating rayon, silk, wool and cotton yarns, (2) mixtures of sulphonated olive oil and raw olive oil, white mineral oil and raw sperm fatty alcohols, for soaking natural silk, or finishing fabrics, (3) sulphonated tallow mixed with paraffin wax or coconut oil, tallow and paraffin oil, for finishing fabrics, or (4) sulphonated sperm oil and paraffin oil for finishing fabrics. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 526,553.
